Governor Alexandre Le Borgne du Coudray, sieur de Belle-Isle was born in France in about 1640. He was baptized at the church of Saint-Barthélemy in La Rochelle, Aunis (today Charente-Maritime), and was the son of Gov. Emmanuel Le Borgne de Belle-Isle and Jeanne François.[1][2][3]
Alexandre's father, Emmanuel Le Borgne de Belle-Isle financed key expeditions to Nouvelle-France, including that of Gov. Charles de Menou d'Aulnay; and both Emmanuel and his son Alexandre would later become governors of the French colony at Acadie. [4][5][2][6][7][8]
Early Years in Acadia and the French Attack on Fort La Hève
Alexandre first came to Acadia together with his father, Emmanuel, in 1654.[3]
In 1657, his father, Emmanuel Le Borgne, was appointed by the King of France as Governor of Acadia but was unable to leave Europe, and he sent his son Alexandre to the colony with some 50 men to take possession, as the colony had been subjected to attacks by the English.[8]
Shortly thereafter, in May 1658, Alexandre Le Borgne, about 18 years old, led a successful attack on the English fort of La Hève. However, following a subsequent counterattack by English forces, Alexandre was wounded and eventually captured and taken prisoner. Besides leadership in the attack, he was a French noble and son of the Governor, and so he was taken to London, where he was held for several years.[8]
Treaty of Breda and Governorship
In 1667, the Treaty of Breda restored Acadia to France, and Alexandre's father, Emmanuel Le Borgne, recovered his former possessions. The following year, in 1668, his son Alexandre became Governor of Acadia and also assumed the title of Belle-Isle, associated with his father.[8][9]
In October 1668, Governor Alexandre Le Borgne de Belle-Isle sailed the coast of Acadia with Morillon Du Bourg, who was the French King's delegate for execution of the Treaty of Breda and was also the representative of the West Indies Company. Alexandre was officially installed as Governor of Acadia, but soon thereafter he warned Le Borgne to return to France because there were still disputes related to the handover of islands in the West Indies to France. Le Borgne followed Du Bourg's advice but noted that the supply of his men and forces had cost him more than 20,000 livres.[8]
In 1670, Alexandre Le Borgne returned to Acadia with Governor Adnigné de Grandfontaine to defend the Le Borgne family's interests in the colony. The following year, he was involved in proceedings regarding lands brought in France by Dame Marie de Menou d'Aulnay, the canoness of Poussay.[8][10]
In 1675, at the age of 35, Governor Le Borgne married Marie de Saint-Etienne de La Tour, daughter of Charles and Jeanne Motin de Reux.[3][11]
Alexandre and Marie had seven children:[2]

"Also in the household was Estienne AUCHER [HACHE'?], domestic, aged 13. Their weapons, lands, cattle, and sheep were not listed, as were all others."[12][13]
